What is Server Virtualization?

Server Virtualization

Many people often get confused by the term virtualization while enquiring about the Virtual Private Server (VPS) and the plans. Still, it is not clear about what it is and how does it work. This blog post we will be discussing the basics of server virtualization and all the types of virtualizor along with their pros and cons.

What is Virtualizor?

Virtualizor refers to the act of creating a virtual machine with virtual hardware platforms, storage devices, and server resources. It relates to the running of more than one operating system on single physical hardware whereas server virtualization refers to partitioning a single dedicated server into several virtual smaller virtual server while utilizing its resources to the maximum. The servers are isolated from other users in the virtual environment. These virtual environments are known as Virtual Private Servers or Virtual Machines. The software that is used to partition the server is known as Hypervisor.

Benefits of using a Virtualizor

Virtualizor is an ideal solution for small to mid resource requirements of the application or a website. Some of the reasons to use virtualization are as below:

  1. Virtualization helps in preserving the space as several resources share the same resources. Thus it helps in effective resource management.
  2. Virtual Server offers the users to use virtual machines as their dedicated servers with the very less price. Virtual Servers are really helpful in this case for the SMBs and Startups that do not require a dedicated server.
  3. Data Backups are very easy and simple for the Virtual Private Servers and thereby prevents the data loss.

Types of Virtualizors:

Although several virtualizors differ from each other by technology and the needs. There are two most widely used types of Virtualizor- KVM (Kernel-Based Virtual Machine) and Virtuozzo.

KVM

KVM stands for Kernel-based virtual machines. It is a VPS primarily for Linux OS though it supports Windows, BSD, and Solaris OS as well. It is virtualization in its real sense as the resulted VPS operates as its server, not dependent on the host node. It is an open source and hardware-based virtualizor.

Pros:

  1. It is an open source virtualizor.
  2. It is based on Linux; it is highly secured.

Cons:

  1. Complex to set up and requires adequate knowledge.
  2. It is limited only to some processors and difficult to manage.

Virtuozzo:

is not a free and open source virtualizor. It is a container based and with a proprietary Kernel Service Abstraction Layer that manages the kernel and prevents any VPS to put the entire server down.

Pros:

  1. You can efficiently utilize the server resources.
  2. It has a web-based GUI Panel.
  3. It is an independent platform can be used for both Linux and Windows OS.

Cons:

  1. RAM is shared in Virtuozzo, thus can lead to the shortage of RAM.
  2. Sharing resources can be harmful.

Conclusion:

Server Virtualization is widely used and continue to grow with the advancement in the new technology. KVM can be helpful when you want full control of the resources. Or on the other hand, if you have major requirements, then Virtuozzo will be the best move. As your customers want to invest on is personally your depending on the budget and the usage.
